First it is better to train your bird while it is still young, older canaries tend to be more shy and are therefore harder to train. Still their taming requires time and patience. Make sure your canary is male and without a female, or it will bond with her more than you. - 2
Give a taming lesson each time is removed from the cage. Several times a day. It should be in a medium sized room with no furniture or places for the bird to hide, don't worry, if the room is closed the bird won't escape. - 3
The more accustomed a bird is to humans, the faster it is to train. You can also train the bird by keeping it in the cage at first and then training it outside the cage. It may shiver and avoid your advances at first, but be patient. - 4
Allow the bird to adjust at first. Don't expect for the bird to start from the first few days. Leave it at least a month to get used to you, so stand next to the cage for about 10 minutes daily. - 5

Speak and whistle softly to the bird to keep it calm. Offer a perch such as a stick while holding it in the beginning, When the bird is used to the stick, start putting in your finger. Press the stick or your finger onto the breast region of the canary to make it climb on to your finger (or stick) - 7
When your bird learns to stay on your finger or the stick (usually after a month or more of training), you can start taking the bird in and out of the cage. - 8
If the bird bites you, don't make any jerking or sudden movements, or that will set back your accomplishments with the bird two weeks. - 9
Once the bird is well used to you, you can move on to further taming outside the cage. Move to a room with less furniture and no places for the bird to hide,close the curtains to avoid the bird flying into windows, and cover the mirrors . - 10
To make the bird return to the cage, scatter some seeds in front of the door, you might want to place a perch beside the cage to put the bird after session. - 11
If it does not manage to come down by itself, bring it down on you finger or a stick. Or with a soft little towel or net. Put rugs on the floors to prevent the bird from long falls and too much damage. - 12
Now surround the bird with your fingers and coax it into your hand, backing it into a corner will make this easier, now let it perch on your hand and make it comfortable. Reward your bird with a treat or some seeds when it does something good. - 13
Once it is comfortable on your hand, you can perch it on your shoulder and even your head! Just remember, there is no such thing as a housebroken canary! - 14
Offer it plenty of food and water after the sessions, your canary should be tired after all that happened. Train the bird for longer sessions each day and continue until the next year. It will happily eat seeds from your hand after its tamed.
