It's difficult to distinguish male and female when they are young. When getting mature, the male's feathers will get colourful. IN vietnam, I see people feed them by mixing sugar or honey with water, fruit (bananas, apple, papaya), mosquito larvae. The mature male will sing when putting 2 males' cages close together, but not always because they will get familiar and will not sing.
