Mustached Parakeets
General:
The Asian Mustached Parakeet is an array of gorgeous colors! They are approximately 14 inches long including the tail. As babies, their upper mandibles are orange and eventually change to black with maturity. Male Mustached Parakeets will change back to a candy corn colored beak.
Mustached Parakeets are very good talkers, capable of 20 words or more. With that said, not every Mustached Parakeet will speak. Do not ever purchase a bird for it's ability to talk only. They are individuals just like us. They can have a life expectancy of 25 years or more so think carefully about your commitment.
Environment:
The Mustached parakeet originates from China and Indonesia.
Diet:
Mustached parakeet parrots require a varied diet that includes a high-quality commercial pellet formula, seed mixture, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables. For a complete list, visit out the
fresh food list.
Breeding:
Breeding parrots is recommended for experienced parrot owners. Mustached Parrots are compariable to breeding Indian Ring-necked parakeets. Once you've gotten yourself a bonded pair, you can set them up in a larger cage with a lengthy and deep nestbox.
The female with lay 2 to 4 white eggs and the incubation period is 22 days. Once the chicks hatch, it is best to check on the babies to ensure the hen is feeding them.
If the babies are to be pulled for hand feeding, the owner should wait until the oldest chick in the clutch is between 12 and 15 days old. You will want to monitor the other chciks, hens will abandon the other chicks at times when one is missing.
Most baby Moustached Parakeets will wean around 10 weeks but some can take longer. Weaning should be a time of food exploration and growth for the baby parrot.
Housing:
Parrots like to be around the family so it is best to place the bird cage in an area free of drafts and where the family spends the most time, usually the living or dining room. The cage should be large enough for the bird to extend its entire wingspan.
Emotional Well-Being:
Moustached Parakeets are extremely intelligent. They are a quieter parrot overall and would be suitable for apartments. They will enjoy hours of playtime in and out of the cage. Plenty of colorful toys with different textures will entertain and satisfy a Mustached Parakeets need for chewing and stimulation.
As with all parrots, clean and rotate the toys often (every 2 weeks) to prevent boredom. Always remove any broken or soiled toys immediately.
This species is known for being more of a one person bird. Moustached Parakeets can have a tendency to choose a favorite person and bond with them. If it is important to have your parrot interact with all the members in the household, you may want to choose a different type of parrot.
